The Sevastopol marine Aquarium-Museum is one of the oldest public aquariums in Europe, is the oldest marine aquarium in the country. It was founded in 1897 in the Sevastopol biological station. The idea of the Aquarium creation belongs to the first Director of the Sevastopol biological station of the academician A. O. Kovalevsky.
During the second world war the Museum building was partially destroyed, and the exposition is irrevocably lost. In 1948-1950 years was conducted works on construction of buildings and installation of a marine aquarium. And in 1951, the Aquarium was opened to visitors.
The Sevastopol Aquarium-Museum is a well-known cultural and educational institution. It is annually visited by approximately 100,000 people. The exposition of the Aquarium-Museum occupies three halls with a total area of about 200 sq. m. Continue reading
